For more information on the evolution of the space suite and a peek into its future, check out MIT aeronautics professor and engineer Dava Newman’s PopTech 2011 talk. She introduces some of her favorites designs, including a mobility-enhancing “Bio-Suit” created to protect astronauts from atmospheres and healthcare workers from germs.

Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2012

I haven’t loved a Jean Paul Gaultier collection this much in a long time.  The presentation, the accessories, the individual pieces, the theme, all of it is brilliant.

As “Savage Beauty,” a retrospective of Alexander McQueen’s astonishing and provocative work, opens at the Costume Institute, creative director Sarah Burton shares with Sarah Mower her memories of working at the late designer’s side.
Sarabande, Spring 2007

“The collection was based on Handel’s ‘Sarabande’ in the film Barry Lyndon. It was held in the round at the Cirque d’Hiver Bouglione in Paris, with classical musicians playing onstage under a giant chandelier. This dress had fresh flowers on it. We put them on just before she went out, and they started to fall off one by one as she walked. I remember people saying Lee timed it. We had a laugh about that. It was an accident!”
On model Caroline Trentini: silk dress embroidered with silk and fresh roses, hydrangeas, and peonies.
